Over the years,geocaching has developed its own set of terms, slang and abbreviation. If you play the game for any length of time, terms like "muggle" and "FTF" will become a natural part of your vocabulary, but to the new cacher or uninitiated these terms can be confusing.
The geocaching glossary is always growing and developing just as the game is. One feature of the Geocacher University glossary is that--in addition to searching terms in this page--you will find definitions within the articles and content of the site. With any dictionary there are always questions of the accuracy of the definition. I make no pretense of in depth knowledge of technical terms. In writing these definitions I've tried to keep in mind the question, "If we were talking about geocaching over a cup of coffee how would I describe this term?"

An unofficial trail that diverges from an existing trail, as a shortcut to the destination. A social trail usually cuts through a vegetative barrier, such as woods, scrubs, and grass fields (from Wikipedia).
In geocaching these are often called "Geotrails." They tend to spring up quickly in areas where there is a lot of vegetation and the caches are hidden far off the main trail. For better or for worse, social trails will often lead you directly to the cache.
