Over the years,geocaching has developed its own set of terms, slang and abbreviation. If you play the game for any length of time, terms like "muggle" and "FTF" will become a natural part of your vocabulary, but to the new cacher or uninitiated these terms can be confusing.
The geocaching glossary is always growing and developing just as the game is. One feature of the Geocacher University glossary is that--in addition to searching terms in this page--you will find definitions within the articles and content of the site. With any dictionary there are always questions of the accuracy of the definition. I make no pretense of in depth knowledge of technical terms. In writing these definitions I've tried to keep in mind the question, "If we were talking about geocaching over a cup of coffee how would I describe this term?"

An archived cache is one that has been removed from the listings of Geocaching.com. The cache page is still available for review, but will not show up when searching for caches in an area.
Caches are generally archived when they are missing, destroyed or removed by the owner. Caches that simply need attention or repair are "temporarily disabled" rather than archived.
