The Geocaching Glossary

The Geocaching Glossary

Over the years, geocaching has developed its own set of terms, slang and abbreviation. If you play the game for any length of time, terms like "muggle" and "FTF" will become a natural part of your vocabulary, but to the new cacher or uninitiated these terms can be confusing.

The geocaching glossary is always growing and developing just as the game is. One feature of the Geocacher University glossary is that--in addition to searching terms in this page--you will find definitions within the articles and content of the site. Simply put your mouse over the linked terms (identified with this question mark Glossary) and the definition will pop-up.

With any dictionary there are always questions of the accuracy of the definition. I make no pretense of in depth knowledge of technical terms. In writing these definitions I've tried to keep in mind the question, "If we were talking about geocaching over a cup of coffee how would I describe this term?"

As always, I welcome your input on this section. If you have any words you would like to see defined or if you find mistakes or need for further clarification please contact me and I will do my best to address the issues.

Ammo Can

Geocaching Term

Ammo CanA metal military issued box often used as a cache container. Ammo cans are known for their durability and watertight rubber seal.  They come in a wide range of sizes from the small 30 caliber ammo can to the larger 25MM ammo can.

Ammo cans make great containers in the proper places. Be careful around heavily trafficked areas as the site of an ammo box can frighten people who don't know about geocaching. Be sure to remove all military markings and mark them with a GEOCACHE sticker.
