The Geocaching Glossary

The Geocaching Glossary

Over the years, geocaching has developed its own set of terms, slang and abbreviation. If you play the game for any length of time, terms like "muggle" and "FTF" will become a natural part of your vocabulary, but to the new cacher or uninitiated these terms can be confusing.

The geocaching glossary is always growing and developing just as the game is. One feature of the Geocacher University glossary is that--in addition to searching terms in this page--you will find definitions within the articles and content of the site. Simply put your mouse over the linked terms (identified with this question mark Glossary) and the definition will pop-up.

With any dictionary there are always questions of the accuracy of the definition. I make no pretense of in depth knowledge of technical terms. In writing these definitions I've tried to keep in mind the question, "If we were talking about geocaching over a cup of coffee how would I describe this term?"

As always, I welcome your input on this section. If you have any words you would like to see defined or if you find mistakes or need for further clarification please contact me and I will do my best to address the issues.

Nano Cache

Slang/Technical Term

Nano cacheA nano cache is an extremely small micro cache. They're usually either small metal containers (like bison tubes) or small magnetic containers (also sometimes called "blinkies").

Nano cache is not recognized as a size designation by Geocaching.com. They are simply considered micro caches.

Needs Archived

Geocaching Log Type

SBAOne of the log types available on Geocaching.com. Also called "SBA" for "Should Be Archived."

Use this log if the cache cannot or should not be replaced due to outside forces (new construction, land management, or dangers). When a SBA log is posted the local cache reviewer receives notification of it and may take action to archive the cache. Use this log type sparingly and only in situations where you are certain of the problem at the cache site.

Needs Maintenance

Geocaching Log Type

Needs MaintenanceSometimes abbreviated as "NM." Use this log type if the cache is in need of attention from the owner (ie. It has become damaged, wet, or in need of a new logbook). Use of this log type places a "Needs Maintenance" attribute on the cache page which remains until the owner posts an "Owner Maintenance" log.

NeoCacher

Geocaching Term

A new geocacher. Also called a "Newbie."

Newbie

Internet Slang

Also "noob" or "n00b." A Newbie is someone who is "new" to a particular activity, even geocaching.

How long before you're no longer considered a newbie? No one really knows, but visiting this site has been known to cut down on the time considerably!
